Description
What you'll do
As a Controller, you will be responsible for
- β’Financial Reporting & Close Management
- β’Own the full financial close cycle (monthly, quarterly, annual) - delivering accurate financial statements, variance analysis, and executive-ready dashboards
- β’Prepare and deliver audited financial statements, managing the audit cycle from planning through completion
- β’Partner with RevOps and SalesOps on revenue recognition and deferred revenue in alignment with IFRS standards
- β’Manage GL and sub-ledger integrity, including intercompany reconciliations, key balance sheet accounts, and payroll journal entries across Canadian, US, and international entities
- β’Technical Accounting & Policy Governance
- β’Serve as the internal authority on complex accounting matters under IFRS and Canadian GAAP
- β’Establish and evolve accounting policies, chart of accounts, and revenue recognition standards
- β’Maintain awareness of the Canadian and international tax landscape, including multi-jurisdiction compliance
- β’Compliance, Audit & Risk Management
- β’Lead annual financial statement audits and manage external auditor relationships
- β’Design and continuously improve internal control frameworks to support Canadian and international regulatory requirements
- β’Oversee multi-jurisdictional tax compliance: GST/HST, PST, WCB, corporate tax instalments, US state taxes, VAT, and payroll obligations
- β’Support treasury activities, including payment approvals and foreign currency coordination
- β’AI Enablement & Process Automation
- β’Identify and lead automation opportunities across routine accounting processes - reconciliations, journal entries, payroll uploads, and reporting workflows
- β’Own NetSuite as the primary system of record - including data structure, chart of accounts, and all input/output processes
- β’Champion AI adoption and document standardized workflows to create a scalable, transferable accounting operating model
- β’Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Partnership
- β’Directly manage and develop a team of AR/AP coordinators, with accountability for mentorship, performance, and team growth
- β’Serve as a strategic cross-functional partner to Sales, HR, and Information Services - and provide accounting oversight on order processing and revenue operations
Requirements
Qualifications, Skills, and Competencies
Safers come from a variety of backgrounds with a diversity in skills and knowledge. That said, we find that those who are most successful in this role have experience with the following areas.
Required Skills:
- β’CPA designation
- β’6-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including Controller or senior accounting leadership
- β’Strong knowledge of IFRS and Canadian GAAP
- β’Experience with ERP systems, particularly NetSuite
- β’Supervisory or team leadership experience, including mentoring and developing team members
- β’Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian multi-jurisdictional tax compliance
- β’Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
- β’Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and translate complex accounting matters into practical business solutions
- β’High attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
Desired Skills / Bonus Points:
- β’Hands-on experience with AI tools or workflow automation within an accounting context
- β’Experience scaling accounting operations in a high-growth or mid-market environment
- β’Exposure to international multi-entity reporting and tax environments (US, Switzerland, Ireland)
- β’Experience leading ERP enhancement or system transformation projects
- β’Familiarity with Deel, UKG, or similar payroll and HR systems
- β’Proven track record in process documentation and continuous improvement
